Challenge and changes

About WIN

Women's Initiative Nepal (WIN) is a community women's initiative to empower themselves and take leadership in their villages. The program started in early 2017 and over 250 women have received active membership from Nagarkot and Bandipur village areas and outskirts of Kathmandu.
With men working overseas or leaving the villages to work in the cities, the women in villages are left in charge of the household and they become the decision makers.
In order to empower the women in the villages, they need a place to gather to discuss community and personal matters, problem solve and gain financial independence through enhancing skills. The aim is to create a platform for this exchange to occur.
The number of interested candidates is growing. However, WIN aims to focus on various activities on developing skills and creating opportunities for these women so as to prepare them to be socially and financially independent, the limit of membership has been set for each year.

Who are these women?

WIN focuses on women from rural villages basically housewives and teenage girls. Most of them have little formal education and have overall responsibility of looking after their children, managing daily household activities and working in the fields.

Mission

Nepalese society has been and still practices patriarchal norms limiting opportunities and access to turn their dreams into reality. Our mission is to create a communal hub for women and girls in rural areas of Nepal who are eager to learn new skills, inspire others and get inspired and upgrade their status quo in their community with collective efforts.

Vision

With recent years of political waves in Nepalese society, women in Nepal have gained momentum on achieving political and social rights on the constitution. However, very less percentage of educated women from urban areas get to practice their indepedence and rights. Rural area remains with old stigma where women are limited to household work. We want to empower women in rural areas through awareness, education and skill enhancement. Empowering women with financial and social freedom and community involvement, they will be accepted normally as community leaders.

Reviews

  • This experience also helped me realize how happy people can be with very little and that it is not a necessity to have more in order to be happy.

  • Deciding to come on this trip was probably the greatest thing to decide because I’ve just been inspired. I’ve gotten to experience new things and gained a new perspective. This trip wasn’t like other trips because it didn’t feel like a school trip. It was more fun and more challenging, especially for me.
